The Yellow Fringed Orchids are blooming
This is one of those sights that make you stop cold in your tracks. The first time I saw this flower in bloom I was alone, by myself with no one else there to admire its delicate beauty. Only found in about six counties in Missouri (Iron, Ripley, Stoddard, Carter, St. Francois) it's a rare site to see. The guidebook Missouri Orchids by Bill Summers describes that this plant blooms from late July to early October and can be found "in woods and thickets bordering spring branches and in the margins of sinkhole ponds. I have seen several of these orchids,(none in Missouri yet) and they've all been along roadsides about 30ft from the edge of the tree line.
